open or shut

it's funny how much people choose to reveal when you decide to shut up, listen, and come into the conversation with a non judgemental attitude. this is an interviewing technique: smile, non-intimidating eye contact, ask one simple question...then low and behold, people start to tell you things as if you're a therapist being paid. people are fun-ny!
the other day, i was talking with a woman who began to tell me her life story. little did she know that (prior to our meeting) i had already googled her and knew more about her than she was choosing to reveal. in a subtle fashion, i swayed the conversation towards another subject that lead this interaction to more revelations...i.e. this is a SMALL world.
she began to talk sh*t about some mutual business associates whom i have nothing against. i nodded and said, "oh really," and when she asked my opinion, i stayed neutral and replied, "we've obviously interacted with so & so on different levels, so i can't share the same sentiments." she was taken aback, as if i were her younger sister refusing to show loyalty.
WOMAN! I just met you 10 minutes ago.
i concluded that her vision was a little cloudy that day and didn't hold it against her. as most of the time; i assess that when people don't have nice things to say, it's more of a reflection of themselves...God knows it is when my (hopefully harmless) rants are initiated. a small example of me choosing less and receiving more than i bargained for.
i don't think there's a point to this entry except for it being a simple reminder to myself...as opinionated as i can be (vocally and mentally) that i may be shutting the door on
opportunities...not that i've ever had a problem opening them back up; but i recognize that it's to my advantage to keep my vision (& opinions) clear and as open as possible.

Very nice, I do have to agree with you on this cousin. I'm one of those people who if you give a chance I'll open up to ya....
