luxuries

i'm sitting in my office just outside of downtown la. this morning i woke up at 6:21am thanks to a wake-up call from my papa. i didn't feel as groggy as usual as i attempted to wake up. the images from watching spike lee's documentary when the levees broke: a requiem in four acts was still on my mind from viewing it last night. however, that didn't stop me from promptly getting out of bed to start my day.

the past couple of days i've been determined to make use of the free gym on the studio lot. on the drive to work, i was thinking about the 2nd act of spike's documentary and how persuasive the images were (that he chose to show.) when i arrived on the lot around 7am; i was excited at the prospect that i might have the gym all to myself this morning. as i entered, i felt a sprinkle of disappointment as there was someone in there using the treadmill. argh, no solo gym time for me!

after my workout; i headed up to my office on the 5th floor. the primary worry on my mind this morning was prepping for our shoot since we're about to leave town on friday. my morning ritual in the office usually goes: 1) turn on computer, 2) make coffee, 3) heat up breakfast, 4) check my work vmail, 5) (sometimes) check my cell phone vmail, 5) check work email, 6) check personal email, 7) check nytimes.com/latimes.com/seattletimes.com/washingtonpost.com/myspace.com
(and all of this usually happens before 9am.)

this morning i did my pre-work routine a little out of order and checked my work voicemail first. there was a message from a producer wanting to hire crew to film a sporting event in san diego. i immediately thought of my homie ricardo for some reason, since he's in san diego and asked me to visit the other day. hmmm...san diego propaganda has been subtly hinting to me lately. maybe, i should possibly consider a quick visit? anyhoo, my momentum this morning was slightly jarred after i read the nytimes. i thought, "okay, now onto more positive news- i'll check seattletimes.com."

within 5 minutes of reading, i could barely breath. i began to cry uncontrollably as i clicked on the photos that the Times had posted of Lito Barber's funeral. Lito was one of (my bro) Bossch's old O'Dea classmates and I know Bossch's good friend Josh & Lito were practically brothers.

i began to think about Lito's family and how our family could relate to what they are currently going through (& will continue to go through); but on a different level since Lito's death was (and still is) highly publicized around seattle. for Lito's family, the reminder will be endless, for god knows, how long.

experiencing death, most especially an unexpected death lingers/rattles/and turns your emotions upside down...you begin to reevaluate everything that you thought was important to you and discard the minor tribulations of life...such as the petty things that were on my mind early this morning. "oh mia, you don't have the gym to yourself this morning...POOR YOU."
(i swear, sometimes, i just need to slap the minor-diva self outta me...it's not healthy for my complexion anyhoo.)

moments like these initiates questions regarding the luxuries of life that we (may) take for granted; as well as the choices that one makes. i suppose i'm making a reference to what i have chosen (lately) to worry me or stress me out...& how, in the scheme of everything, i'm just a grain of salt amongst millions and my worries are even tinier than that grain.
