them = you. do the math.
Mr. Schumer (via nytimes) just posted an article relating to death and most especially the psychological affects of the mourning process. They guestimate for every 1 person who passes, that 4 other people are directly affected for anywhere from 1-5 years, sometimes more. Being that my family has been through a number of deaths in a short amount of time, I can attest to this statistic.
Fast forward to what's going on in the motherland right now. The typhoon that has hit the Philippines has affected over 2 million people and the death count is 240 (so far. ) Multiply that by 4 = 960. Multiply 2 million by 4 = 8 million.
The guestimated total population of Manila/Quezon City proper is about 4.3 million (accounts for almost half of the total country's population.) You can do that math. EVERYONE in the Philippines is affected. In the U.S. alone there are close to 4 million Pilipinos.
WORD. You get it.
You know a Pilipino. You're affected.
